As an avid fan of both Sookie Stackhouse & Anita Blake, I couldn't resist this novel, although it is in a totally different genre to what I normally read. I mean, zombie cows? Wicked! Who'd a thunk it? And that's just the first three pages! Mr. Burrow's styling is darkly comic at times, heart-wrenching at others, making for a fascinating read. The mild-mannered Christian becomes the hero of his fellow zombies once he undertakes the unhappy journey into their ranks, leaving behind a grieving fiancee and devoted father. It is a disturbing revelation in his newly dead state to discover one loved him too much, & the other not enough. Love & familial duties aside, after seeing first-hand the cruelty the other zombies endure at the hands of those still living, Christian decides the time has come to embark on a journey to change the American political landscape, hoping the living & the dead can come to civilized terms with one another. And although his big zombie heart no longer beats, he is shocked to discover it can still find reciprocating love. I found this book to be extremely entertaing, & highly original. I would recommend it to anyone who doesn't mind a little gore mixed in with their social change, true love & the walking undead!

The blurb on the back of The Changed will have you believe that it's about zombies, but not a zombie apocalypse book. Don't be fooled, these zombies rot, gnaw human prey and will devastate the world we know, they just might not kill us. The Changed follows a handful of characters, some alive, some who die and change into something else. Retaining their personalities and skills (and with the help of embalmers, retaining their bits as well), the Changed quickly become the world's largest minority, facing all the prejudice and oppression that comes with the title, plus flamethrowers. No longer sure who are their friends or foes, and with open hunting season on the now profane z-words declared by the military (shown more as bullies than any kind of defense against the invasion) these undead live somewhere between human and not.
Until Chris changes, and the middle of the road, plain-looking man finally finds a political cause that inspires him. Chris quickly organizes the new political party, The Changed, fronted by a shock jock DJ recently fired for having the gall to die. The whole landscape of America changes as The Changed party not only grows in number and drive, but becomes the only surety the living have to look forward to. How do you fight death itself?
The Changed still manages to give zombie fans plenty of their favorite elements, there is a sort-of apocalypse, plenty of violence and gore, and tongue-in-cheek asides hinting at what pop culture would be like if the undead walked. The Changed is an excellent addition to the zombie genre, something new and fun in a tiring routine. Recommended for public and private collections it's an excellent read through and through.
"The Changed" does itself a disservice by allowing itself to be billed as a zombie comedy. It's not about zombies in the typical sense, and it's really not all that funny.
Rather, "The Changed" is an investigation of the sociological results of the widespread return of the dead to life...not as ravening, brain-devouring hordes, but with their memories and personalities intact, albeit in a decomposing shell. The novel asks, and to a certain extent answers, "What would we do?" and "How would our society change?" The answers it provides are surprisingly insightful and reflect the process assimilation of any subculture into the mainstream.
While "The Changed" does have some funny moments in it, it is not primarily a comedy, and if I were to attempt any kind of genre identification, I would be more tempted to put it into the "slice of life" category for its treatment of its leading characters. There are moments in the story that are primarily horrific, or sad, or tender, and each plays out with equal or greater strength to the comedic scenes.
I get the feeling with this book that the author was not quite certain in which direction he wanted to go, and that's the book's main weakness. If Burrows had pursued the social change angle more clearly, this would have been a much stronger novel and could possibly have stood out as iconic in the genre. Instead, by presenting a mixed message, it comes across as a dark comedy, and loses a lot of the power it could have achieved.
Nevertheless, it is still a good read. It's fun and well-paced, written in a very accessible style. Burrows included a lot of Paul Verhoeven-style snippets of news bites and advertising from the "changed" world that break up the story in an interesting way and provide some insight into the changes this world is undergoing. The protagonists are endearing and well-rounded and while there is no clear antagonist, there is a definite sense of struggle that helps define the cast and will, I think, give the reader some food for thought.
If you're tired of the typical run-and-chew zombie story that has largely co-opted the genre ever since George Romero shot in black and white, then "The Changed" is a book you will definitely enjoy.
While this typically isn't my genre, it was an enjoyable change of pace. The struggles the characters face of either accepting the "changed" or shunning them becomes dark and comedic as some of their closest friends/relatives change. I'm pretty sure I was smiling at least half the time I was reading this book. If you're looking for a dark, fun, and easy read I would recommend giving this book a try.
